Crochet.Community Collaboration #1- Mandala 2015 #2: Suggestions For Yarns and Hook Sizes

There is already a big buzz about the Collaboration Mandala.. and lots of questions about yarn and hook sizes.

Perhaps you would like to share your plans and/or your questions here in this discussion — for easy reference for others, especially our beginner crocheters.

What yarn are you using? How many colours do you plan on using? What size hook?

Debbie (life & crocheting have a lot in common: it's all about one stitch at a time.)

Debbie Pribele ...

I’ll be using my trusty 5mm crochet hook and the yarn will be from my “stash” of … well, whatever I have. It is mostly worsted weight so that will be my go-to.

Mrs Eviltedi ...

i have masses of DK so that’ll be the yarn. i have loads of 4mm hooks so that seems most likely as i can then save the hook and project together

I can’t wait to see everyone’s choices … starting with “the first row”

I have never done a group project before. I would love to participate, but have very little yarn (leftover or otherwise) right now [due to financial issues {hubby lost his job a while back so we are in the recovery stages}]. I would like to do this, so I will use what I have and hope that I can buy a little along to get to the finish line. I have mostly 4 ply worsted weight Red Heart yarns. My favorite hook for this weight is a J hook, as it seems the project comes out much softer when I use a larger hook. Excited to see what everyone comes up with. Presently I have black, purple, pink, yellow and light blue. We’ll see what happens! Thanks.

well… you can go as far as your yarn will let you and you can always participate in the decision process re: “next rows” .. and then when life gets back on track, you can jump right back in!
I hope 2015 brings you surprise opportunities that are golden!!

Maureen ...

I assume that double is what in U.K. is treble If so I’ll use a 4.50mm hook and double knit.

Red Heart left overs for now, with a 4.25mm hook, going to pick up more yarn for the other CAL so may have some more left overs to add, it will be colorful that’s for sure

BarbS ...

May I ask a dumb question? What is ‘DK’ yarn? I’ve seen the term several places, and in patterns, and I don’t know what it is. Is it a ‘fingering’ yarn?

BarbS ...

And.. pictures as we go? or no pictures, the end product a surprise?

Debbie Pribele ...

Pictures as you go would be wonderful…,it will be fascinating to see the different colours etc

Lighthouseladyca ...

I am using my 5.5mm as preferred hook. And all my yarn will be left overs from projects that I completed in 2014 as have many lose balls and will be adding black and maybe white to future it along

Debbie Pribele ...

I had purchased a WHOLE LOT of cream/white/black through a Walmart special .. so those will be my main colours – plus a splash of leftovers throughout. Or that’s the plan
